I think I should get attention ALL THE TIME. If you're doing something that's distracting you I will not hesitate to come interrupt you. The methods I use the most are: the head bonk, the shoulder climb, the desk takeover, and on occasion the chin nibble. I think Queen said what I want best... "Can anybody find me somebody to love?"
